I love that you re-committed to self-care to combat the burnout. The little things... the easy, healthy meals, the extra 20 minutes, eating lunch in the park instead... just what is needed! I am a manager and 1000% believe we can take care of ourselves to avoid burnout even during the busiest of times. Leaders must promote this if they want their employees at their best mental and physical health - they will be better on the job if they are avoiding burnout with self-care.
Thanks Melissa! I totally agree, especially on leadership. I’ve found I’m better at self-care when I think of it as role-modelling for my colleagues. My section at work had slipped into a bad habit of eating while emailing, but in recent months I’ve blocked out a lunch slot on my calendar and made a point of getting away from my desk and encouraging others to do so too. Every little helps!
This is so timely! I hadn’t been getting any exercise—it’s been in the upper 90s here and work has been busy. I have had such trouble sleeping! And then this past week, I started finding time to walk even just a bit—around the lake where I work has been lovely, and there are ducklings to see! (And a ramp that a colleague installed to help the ducklings in and out of the lake, which makes me feel good about humanity.) When I walk, I sleep well.
Yesterday, I sat all day doing course prep. And I had trouble sleeping last night! So, when I got up this morning, I went for a walk. This is now non-negotiable: I must have some moving around every day.
I like your idea of eating outside. I’m going to try that. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your experience Monica 🙂 It’s amazing how much difference a little exercise and fresh air makes to our sleep, isn’t it! I definitely don’t sleep well if I’ve been hunched over a keyboard all day, it’s tough to wind down. But a little time in the woods really helps or even just stretching my legs in my neighbourhood.
Your local ducklings sound lovely, and so sweet of your colleague to help them with a ramp! Good for you for making your walk a non-negotiable and I hope you enjoy dining al fresco!
I too am part of the summer skeleton crew at work and I resonate so deeply with this! Thank you for prompting me to reexamine my self care routine, especially during the month when ‘everyone takes a break’ 🙏
You're totally welcome Jess! I think our bosses need a reminder at times too that not all of us are getting downtime...I hope you get some space for proper self-care this week 🙃

SO true - every little moment of self-care (esp at work) helps! At work I take short walks outside as well - those are my fav!
